So, how did I figure this out? I had to, due to being an insomniac for most of my adult life. The problem started in college when I used to pull "all-nighters" to study. This unfortunate habit disrupted my circadian rhythms or sleep cycles for a long time. I've tried sleep-aids such as sleeping pills but worried about their side effects and health risks.

If you think marriage with children is tough enough … add insomnia!

My insomnia continued after college and was made worse after the birth of my two sons. Like most infants, my boys had problems distinguishing day from night. As a result, like all mothers, I had to figure out how to get some sleep while my babies slept (unlike me, my sons slept well after a few months).

Besides, my husband's erratic work schedule wrecked my sleep patterns even more. Some days he would have to get up at 4 am, two hours after I'd gone to bed. He would quietly go about his morning routine, turn on the softest of lights, and he still interrupted my sleep.

As if light weren't enough, sounds were also an issue, and being a light sleeper didn't help — despite his trying to tread as softly as he could, even the slightest sound complicated matters.

To makes matters worse, after my husband left for work, my racing thoughts kept me awake! 

I tried almost everything

I was frustrated! I searched for solutions and experimented with a variety of options. I tried and tested different scents, teas, lotions, sleeping positions, sheets and pillows to enhance sleep. I also discovered sleep - inducing foods and beverages. I explored ways to ease my worries and develop nighttime strategies that improved my sleep. Then I realized - the secret for good sleep depends on a combination of all the above.
